Dice Breakers | Moving Beyond Pair Share

A fun way to get students talking about content.

We’re a couple of weeks into school and your students have mastered pair share - great! But now they’re bored…and you’re bored. So try out this strategy next: Dice Breakers.

The image shown here is part of my Building Relational Capacity Dice Breakers strategy slide deck, but you can easily adapt this so that students talk about whatever content you are teaching them. It’s as easy as rolling the dice - well, one anyway.

Dice Breaker Prompts

Try using some of these sentence starters as your Dice Breaker prompts:

  • One thing I learned was…

  • I noticed that…

  • After rereading my notes I…

  • I underlined or highlighted…

  • A word that is new to me is…

  • A connection I made to yesterday’s learning was…

  • One thing I still don’t understand is…

  • My partner and I discussed…

  • A wondering I have is…

  • An annotation I made was…
